The Lions Club of Diamond/Grove yesterday hosted a fund raising programme at the Ramada Princess Hotel to raise funds for the Lions Club International, located in the US. The money is to assist those affected by recent
disasters and to aid an eight-year-old in Guyana who suffered from an eye injury earlier this year.
Crystal Edwards, the eight-year-old pupil of the Grove Primary School sustained severe injuries to her left eye while in school last June. The organization has since taken on the responsibility of financing the young child until she reaches to Grade Six.
This Lions Club intends to finance the cost of the surgery for the child. The surgery, however, cannot be done in Guyana. The organization will also bear the cost of transportation and accommodation. It is making the necessary arrangements to have Edwards taken to Trinidad to do an eye implant.
The Ministry of Public Health has pledged a significant amount for the surgery.
Petal Ridley, Coordinator for the Lions Club International Foundation said that the club has been functioning in the Diamond/Grove area for the past seven years and has since contributed in several ways to the community.
It constructed a bus shed and conducted School feeding programmes for a number of classes. Forty pupils were able to obtain spectacles through the foundation as well.
The local club and Lions Club International will contribute the basic needs of the individuals who were affected by the recent hurricanes.
As recent as September 29, the International Foundation donated to several areas in Texas, USA that were devastated by Hurricane Harvey.
It has also rendered assistance to the Caribbean Region which had several countries ravaged by the hurricanes. Additionally, Japan, South Asia and Mexico are a few who would have benefitted from supplies coming from the Lions Club International Foundation.
