Dear Editor,
Kindly permit me a space in your newspaper to highlight a dangerous practice that is being carried out by a gold dealer. Mr. Editor, this particular businessman operates a jewelry shop in Charity and it has been observed that on a daily basis he buys “raw gold”.
For those who are not aware, raw gold is the term used for gold that is in its pure state or gold that has been mixed with mercury (quick silver) that is used in the extractive process of this precious metal.
One day while sitting in the vicinity of his shop, I noticed some drops of assumed rained and I exclaimed that “in this hot sun, we going and getting some drizzled” to which another person in the vicinity responded, “ it’s not rain, is mister X burning gold.”
Ignorant of the process of the gold burning, I enquired from the said gold trader about the process and he willingly explained it.
I then asked about the droplets that we saw outside of his shop to which he instantly replied that it’s the “quick silver gas” coming through his chimney. I was shocked’
Mr. Editor, from my readings, mercury is a very toxic metal and when inhaled or ingested, it causes serious and permanent medical anomalies.
This mercury vapor coming out of this gold dealer chimney, which in my opinion is too short, poses a serious threat to the vendors and shoppers alike in the area. I’m kindly asking the relevant authorities to please look into this situation before it causes serious medical conditions to the persons in the environs.
