Dear Editor,
In response to my letter which appeared in Kaieteur News 10/3 edition, Mr. Hydar Ally, in a letter appearing in your letter section, Kaieteur News 10/7, made some interesting, if not, instructive comments.
Firstly, he constructed the phrase “purportedly,” in addressing the specifically referenced letter written by Dr. Cheddie Jagan to the then Colonial Secretary Sir Anthony Greenwood, raising the issue of partition in then British Guyana after the 1964 elections.
Editor, the use of that phase was instructive, however, not surprising, coming from Mr. Hydar Ally.
He has a certain unwavering narrative that he consistently pushes in the public space.
That is indeed his right. Nonetheless, my provision of the source confirming the authenticity of the letter should allow readers to draw their own conclusions.
Yet, in the second and third paragraphs of his response letter, Mr. Hydar Ally introduced some salient points as part of his narrative.
He stated that Dr. Cheddie Jagan was strong anti-colonist, nationalist, and, an advocate for national unity. Given those credentials, nothing of the sort would form part of any communications or letter.
However, and, to my relief, Mr. Ally provided context to what he deemed a “purportedly written” letter.
He told us that the reference was specific to the talk of partition in the country, given the fear that a majority of the electors would have been denied the right to have a government of their choice.
Given the above, how can Mr. Ally assert that his intervention was necessary in order to “dispel any myths and fabrications,” when he himself acknowledged and provided context for the letter. Moreover, in my letter, I asked the question of Mr. Ally, given that the issue of partition was raised by Dr. Jagan in a letter now accepted as authentic by Mr. Ally himself.
Editor, Hydar Ally has every right to his opinions and historiography. However, he is not entitled to his own facts.
Or, he certainly cannot invent and embellish that which I did not write. I understand his burden given the binary world from where he exists.
