As part of efforts to boost its capability to fight crime, the Guyana Police Force, (GPF) is set to receive 30 containers of equipment which includes 56 vehicles and other mechanism from the Chinese Government.
This is according to Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan. Ramjattan was at the time addressing reporters during a press conference at the boardroom of the Ministry of Public Security, on Brickdam on Wednesday.
Ramjattan said that he believes that the assets received from China will boost the efficiency of the GPF.
He disclosed that the shipment of some 30 containers from China with assets to be utilised by the GPF will be cleared in a matter of days.
“We are going to have a huge set of assets coming in from the People’s Republic of China.
Thirty containers are out there to be cleared with a whole lot of vehicles, ATVs, computers and a whole lot more.”
Ramjattan noted that support from other countries is extremely appreciated.
He said, too, that the much needed supplies came at a time when the 911 system throughout the country will be up and running soon.
“The 911 system, which is being tested with GTT and Digicel officials, should be cleared for operationalising in another two weeks,” he said. Ramjattan asserted that adequate training for the quick response system was conducted.
“The training has gone on and so when people now make a report, they are going to get the answers and we are going to have the assets by that time too, to respond.
Our response time in and around Georgetown, we want to be in minutes and with all that hardware that is going to be coming in, we’re certainly going to have a Christmas that is better than previous years,” he said
Since assuming office in May, the APNU+AFC government has announced several initiatives to boost the crime fighting capacity of the GPF.
Among those initiatives was the Citizens Security Programme (CSP). Government has formulated an “emergency smart street safe city proposal” that will see the installation of over 100 CCTV cameras in and around the city, where over 50 per cent of crimes are committed.
The footage from some of CCTV cameras has since led to convictions in hundreds of careless driving and dangerous driving cases.
