Dear Editor,
Parliament will not reconvene until the return of the Speaker who is a trip to St Petersburg, Russia from October 11, 2017, to October 20, 2017. What nonsense? An entire nation’s business has to await the return of one individual? What happens if my brother has to make a visit to the Pearly Gates of St Peter, will we also postpone the Guyana Parliament? The legislative branch, judicial branch or the executive branch and for that matter, any organ of the State should not have to wait on anyone since as a collective the Guyana Parliament is supreme over a mere Speaker; PERIOD!
But what is most shocking is that these visits are usually reserved for courtesy visits for backbenchers as support for Speaker especially in a time when we have a packed legislative agenda that require urgent progress so that the nation can make way for the presentation and debates on the 2018 National Budget in November-December 2017. In that tradition, I observed the PPP nominated Bheri Ramsarran (a backbencher) and not their lead parliamentary person, Ms. Gail Texiera, which illustrates that party understands the protocol.
The PNC led Coalition Government, on the other hand, chose the occasion to ships the Prime Minister of the whole country out of the place in such an important period. Such a situation illustrates two things – 1) how unimportant the current Prime Minister of Guyana Mr. Moses Nagamotoo is to the decision making the process of Guyana and 2) there is a calculated move by Congress Place to devour and deflower what is left of Moses Nagamotoo the individual. He is now tactically demoted to a ribbon cutter, a delegation filler, an excuse finder and a dignified BS artist peddling foolish propaganda for the regime.
Was it worth it Moses Nagamootoo? For a few sirens and short time visit to that house in Main Street, was it worth it to lose your soul, your reputation, and your following? It was Dwight Eisenhower, a former US President and military man who said that the supreme quality of leadership is unquestionable integrity. We know who has lost every iota of their integrity since May 2015. Carry on Moses, how much further are you prepared to fall in the eyes of the Guyanese people?
