At a Press Conference yesterday with the leaders of Santa Rosa Village, Region One, grave concern was expressed on the government pretending to care and protect the villagers.
Village Councillor, Basil Cornelius said, “They pretend to like us and even now, they pretend to say that they protect us, but if you look at the Amerindian Act (you will see) it doesn’t really give any protection.”
The Councillor said he fears the oil giants exploring and discovering oil in their community since the Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman is permitted to remove the villagers with any discovery. According to him, “There is nothing that says the Minister can’t do away with the protected area and develop the natural resources found as an industry.”
These views were expressed due to an ongoing subject that the Toshao and Councillors are trying to resolve with their boundaries being demarcated wrongfully by the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC).
