Broadcasters who are yet to reapply for licences under the new regulations as stipulated in the Broadcast (Amendment) Bill 2017 have only a few days remaining to reapply for their licences and avoid being penalized.
The Guyana National Broadcasting Authority (GNBA) yesterday issued a statement seeking to “remind, once again, all previously licensed Broadcasters and all who were broadcasting without a licence before the commencement of Broadcasting (Amendment) Act 2017, that they need to apply to the GNBA for a current licence within thirty days of the enactment of this Law.”
GNBA said that the call comes in the wake of the recent announcement by the Ministry of the Presidency that President David Granger, on September 7, last, signed into law the Broadcasting (Amendment) Act 2017.
GNBA said, “All those who had an application pending with the GNBA for a licence before 7 September 2017, also need to visit the Authority to amend their pending Applications, or if need be, reapply in accordance with the Amended Broadcast Act 2017 by October 6, 2017.”
GNBA also noted that many existing broadcasters have already started this application process and a number of them have actually completed these procedures with the GNBA as set out in the Broadcasting (Amendment) Act 2017.
The Authority said that all completed applications will be processed expeditiously as they are received by the Authority following the thirty-day stipulation.
GNBA noted, in a message to those broadcasters who are not in compliance with this provision by October 8, 2017, that the Broadcasting (Amendment) Act 2017 prescribes a series of penalties for non-compliance.
GNBA said that it continues to be available to all broadcasters and those wishing to broadcast, on the reapplication procedures and processes, and “looks forward to working with a fully licensed and regulated broadcasting sector for the benefit of all Guyanese.”
