Dear Editor,
I wish to refer to an article published on June 6, 2017, filed under Kaieteur News captioned “ $1.2B East Bank Berbice road rehab green-lighted to start”.
On June 4, 2017, Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, visited the East Bank Berbice area, held a meeting with residents and disclosed to them that “the stretch of road was to have finally undergone construction as early as yesterday.”
By now, I am certain that almost the entire population of Guyana is aware of the fact that the East Bank Berbice road (from Islington Village to Edinburgh Village) is in a dilapidated, shabby and completely unacceptable state. Mr. Patterson mentioned that the day before his visit to the location work was to have begun. Had the Minister kept his word, I would not have had that depressing feeling when I traverse the East Bank Berbice Road. I must inform readers that nothing has been done from the day of his visit to date.
In the article it was stated, “The poor state of the road limits access to the rich agricultural lands in Mara. This, he promised, will be a problem of the past with a new highway slated to be completed in eight months time”. It should be noted that it’s over three months now since Mr. Patterson made those promises, yet no action of building or constructing of a new highway is noticeable.
I have become very frustrated and disheartened with the slothfulness of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure in getting this thoroughfare rehabilitated.
Residents, commuters and motorists have relayed to me that they are appalled at the false and misleading information given, as it relates to the commencement of construction work on the East Bank Berbice route, some three months ago and believed that they were made into “nincompoops”.
Mr. Editor, I even wrote a letter piece in your newspaper over a year ago captioned, “Desperate plea to have this road repaired in Berbice” but it all fell on deaf ears. When will this East Bank Berbice Road be constructed? Was the Minister being fallacious in his speech to those residents? I hope not! I can only be optimistic that work on this road will commence soon. Then again, this is Guyana.
