Dear Editor,
Thank you for affording me the opportunity to express my concern and to discuss the ridiculous posturing that is being exhibited by the senior functionaries of the municipality of Georgetown – with regards to the garbage collection and disposal operation in our once “Garden City”. I am currently residing in Georgetown and have been looking at successive debacles being played out as a result of poor judgment by officials who appeared to be mentally vacuous, lacking in vision, and who clearly do not have the interest in the welfare of those they serve, as a priority.
The manner in which the garbage situation is being handled is an embarrassment not only to the municipality but to the government and the people of Guyana as well. To begin with the disdainful manner in which the enormous debt owed to do contracted disposal companies, Puran Bros and Cevons, showed clearly that they (Mayor & City Council) have been utilizing delaying tactics designed to hamstrung these entities. Why was this debt allowed to accumulate over a period of almost three (3) years? Is the city really cash- strapped as it claims? Has central government ever provided any subvention during this time? Would offering these two (2) companies a paltry sum intermittently be adequate? Is this how financial commitments are honored?
In light of the vast sums owed to these companies, one can well imagine the frustration and despair the management of these organizations must be experiencing. Already, one of them has signaled its intention to reduce its workforce. The survival of these companies as well as that of their staff is at stake. These companies, I am sure, also have their own financial commitments to others as well. Is this the way Guyanese should be treated in their own country? What dismal signals are we sending to our perspective foreign investors? With every step we are sinking deeper into the morass of corruption and deception.
The mayor and town clerk seem not to be cognizant on the way forward and continue to make conflicting pronouncements on various critical issues. There is a garbage crisis looming and a disaster in the making. One does not need to be very observing to note that our city is fast becoming a garbage city. Not to mention the serious impact on the health and welfare of our citizen and visitors as well.
Presently the three other contractors, contracted by the city council in the interim, have been striving courageously to alleviate the garbage situation. However, given their limited capacity and lack of other resources, their efforts can be compared to cleaning the Augean stables, and they are definitely no Hercules among them.
In light of the above, I strongly urge these entrusted with the authority to exercise some prudence and foresight to satisfactorily resolve the issue with Puran Bros. Disposal Inc. and Cevons Waste Management with the greatest of urgency in the hope of averting a national disaster.
