Dear Editor,
I read the recent letter written from a very dissatisfied customer and wondered. Service in banks was pretty grim in the 1990s, when queues were endless, many anxious customers waiting, wondering whether their job would be at risk by using up most of their lunch break, etc. On one occasion I joined a long queue at a Water Street bank, heard the moans of customers, while staff sat around apparently waiting for something to do.
I looked across the area and saw a cashier immediately call forward a chap who had just entered the door clutching some American dollars. That was just “too much” for me. From my position at the very back of the queue, I immediately detached myself, approached the chap and asked him whether he minded allowing me to withdraw some money to buy some food to cook. He willingly obliged.
I decided on this action because of what I had observed on a previous occasion. Some ‘big boys’ had emerged from their rooms at the top of the stairs, looked down at the queues, smirked then, disappeared back into their rooms. They had observed the ‘idle’ staff sitting around! My action was my “enough is enough.” People have got to defend themselves. Demonstrate with banners, if necessary.
