Dear Editor,
I was heartened to see that the judge finally ruled on the case with NBS and its former CEO Mr Maurice Arjoon, then only to see your report on the NBS appeal. While I know everyone has the right to appeal, this is for the man’s pension and as Mr Arjoon says his pension cannot be refused unless he is involved in fraud and everyone knows the outcome of those charges. So why has the Board kept back this gentleman’s pension for over 10 years?
I remember even former Minister Gail Texeira saying that Pension Rights cannot be taken away. Would Madam Texeira comment on this taking away of Pension Rights? And what a shame that this injustice continues. What a shame that even since the Ombudsman report came out there has been a deafening silence from that Bar Association & Private Sector Commission and civil society.
The NBS should be called upon to correct this great miscarriage of justice and not only to pay Mr Arjoon all that the judge “awarded” but in addition the Board itself should award some sort of damages for the dastardly acts during the past 10 years, as well as pension benefits which Mr Arjoon says the Board has also not given to him and refund legal fees. Further, the Managers, Kent Vincent and Kissoon Baldeo should not go to court but be paid by the board also
And I must ask what will be done at the Board for disregarding Labour Laws to dismiss the men and keep back pension due and payable? I also see in your report that according to Rule 49 of the NBS Act the Board does not even have the authority to dismiss the CEO without a Member’s resolution which they never obtained. I hope the Bank of Guyana and the Government has taken note of all of the above and will take appropriate action. After all, NBS is a financial institution with depositors’ money
