A pedestrian was killed around 03:00 hrs yesterday when a cop struck him down on the Soesdyke Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The police constable was at the time taking one of his colleagues, Constable Gavin Gentle, to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre to seek medical attention after he was involved in another accident at Timehri, EBD.
It was while the policeman was heading to the hospital in his car, PPP 8497, that he struck the pedestrian, who was reportedly walking in the centre of the road.
The dead man has not been identified as yet and his body is currently at the Lyken Funeral Parlour.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) in a release said that investigation revealed that at the time of the accident, the police constable was being escorted by a police vehicle with its siren and flashing lights.
The driver of the police vehicle told traffic ranks that he swerved from the pedestrian who was in the centre of the road but the man was struck by the car that was taking the injured rank to hospital.
The victim was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Gentle, who is stationed at the Bartica Police Station, was treated at the Diamond Diagnostic Hospital and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident was tested but no alcohol was detected.
In the previous accident, Constable Gavin Gentle was proceeding south on the Timehri Public Road about 02:30hrs yesterday in motor car PTT 5444,when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a utility pole.
