Member of Parliament Jermine Figueira and the Region Ten Shade House Cooperative Society have collaborated on a project which aims to ensure that citizens of Linden have access to food that is of an organic nature.
The Parliamentarian said that this initiative is in keeping with President David Granger’s vision of food security in each of the regions.
Figueira said, “Each community has its own potential customer base and those people will buy the product as long it is of a good quality, standard and more over if it’s organic.
It is my hope that this will have a ripple effect to encourage others to join in to ensure we have the best food to feed our people while at the same time making money and creating employment opportunities for the residents within each constituency.”
The Lindener said that the Shade House movement has a number of opportunities for niche-market products. He said that the members of the cooperative society have the experience and the know-how to assist and collectively, they will work to realize the vision of food security one shade house at a time.
To kick start the project, members of the movement were given farming tools which included; cutlasses, hoes, spades, forks, files, pick axes, long boots, and tools sets. The Parliamentarian said that these were all make possible by the Food for the Poor Organization and Mrs. Eslene Shockley of Caring For Others which is based in the USA.
