An inconsolable Naomi Persaud, 51, took the rap for her teenage grandson after she pleaded guilty to trafficking 18 pounds of cocaine, when she made an appearance before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Persaud and her 17-year-old grandson were accused of being in possession of nine kilogrammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking on August 6, at Lot 25 Delph Avenue, Campbellville, Georgetown. Naomi pleaded guilty and was jailed for four years and fined $21M.
As a result of her guilty plea the charge was dismissed against the teen.
According to CANU, ranks conducted an operation at a house located at Lot 25 Delph Avenue, Georgetown, during which they found and seized nine rectangular-shaped objects amounting to nine kilogrammes of cocaine. The narcotics were found concealed in a cooking gas cylinder.
Initially, the teenager and his girlfriend who is also 17-year-old, was arrested.
However, no charges were recommended for her.
Meanwhile, the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU), yesterday, issued a wanted bulletin for former murder accused and businessman Andre Gomes, also known as ‘Zipper’ as the probe widens in Sunday’s drug bust. Kaieteur News understands that Gomes who rented the property is in a relationship with Persaud.
In June 2015, a murder charge was withdrawn against Gomes by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) citing insufficient evidence.
He was charged with the May 10, 2015 murder of Nigel Isaacs of Roxanne Burnham Gardens, Georgetown. Isaacs was shot in the head outside Palm Court, Main Street, Georgetown.
Based on reports, on the day in question, Gomes, a licensed firearm holder, discharged several rounds after the driver of a car accidentally collided with another car that was parked on Main Street.
It is alleged that Gomes, who was in the vicinity confronted the driver and discharged several rounds in his direction. The bullets missed the driver and Isaacs was struck in the head.
The injured man succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Gomes was reportedly arrested after spent shells recovered from the crime scene matched those belonging to his gun.
