Dear Editor,
There have been repeated calls for the resignation of Minister Ramjattan by persons who have themselves failed to put forward any solution dissimilar to the Minister’s. Therefore, in the absence of any enlightened solutions to the crime and prison breaks I find there is no logic in such calls.
The Minister has repeatedly said that all solutions require money which his Ministry does not have. Specific to the prison breaks the unruly behavior of the general populace is reflected one thousand times over in the prison system. Like reaction from the disciplined services will see mass casualties. Is the Minister to blame for society’s faults? Even his worse critics would say “no”. Should the Minister throw caution to the wind and order that all necessary force be taken to control the prisoners? Those same critics will whimper and say “yes” until the mess hits the fan.
I am not a fan of Minister Ramjattan. I find he is uncouth, uncultured and yes, obnoxious with his language. However, in his frankness a very honest individual is exposed. Minister Ramjattan does not speak from both sides of his mouth. Thus, he has failed as a politician. Do Guyanese want more politicians or pragmatists? The honest answer should determine his fate.
