– Rogers and McCoy to receive G$230,000 yearly
The pair of Claudrice McCoy, who won gold in the 3000m open at the 2017 Carifta Games and Onassha Rogers, who runs the sprint double of 100m/200m, have been granted full scholarships to attend Monroe College in New York, USA. The two student athletes were part of the 12 athletes who represented Guyana exceptionally at the recently held CARIFTA Games that were all granted full scholarships from the Government to attend the University of Guyana valuing G$230,000 per year for the period of four (4) years.
Now with the fantastic opportunity of attending college in the USA on a full scholarship the National Sports Commission has upheld their promise and the talented athletes will continue to receive G$230,000 per year for four (4) years to help with any fixed costs they may encounter. At a press brief yesterday morning at the National Sports Commission office on Homestretch Avenue, Director of Sports, Christopher Jones, noted that they will have to sign a memorandum of understanding that stipulates, “if for some reason they fail to complete their studies at Munroe College, the payments will cease and if they continue at the university of Guyana, the payment will continue”. Rogers, who will major in Criminal Justice, expressed her appreciation to the NSC and Gov’t for their support, “I’m very excited to have this opportunity to further my studies and I pledge my best to make Guyana and my family proud.” The two athletes will depart Guyana on August 18th.
