Forty-six-year-old Shawn Samuels called ‘Hawaii’ was yesterday remanded to prison for trafficking
narcotics after he appeared before Senior Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The first charge read that on July 31 at Mowasi Landing, Essequibo, he had in his possession 55 grams of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
It was further alleged that on the same day in question he had in his possession five grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
The man was represented by Attorney-at-Law Paul Fung-a-fat.
The lawyer told the court that the alleged narcotics were not found in his client’s possession. He went on to tell the court that the alleged narcotics were found in a workshop which is owned by the defendant, but he had not visited the location for five weeks.
The court heard that the defendant was driving a taxi when he was stopped by a party of policemen who took him to the workshop and told him about the offence.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Stephen Telford objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts. The prosecutor added that the drugs were found in the presence of the defendant and he accepted to ownership of the drugs when the allegation was put to him.
Samuels will make his next court appearance on August 9.
