An 18-year-old was yesterday sentenced to two years’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to a simple larceny charge.
Joshua Austin, of Lot 151 Lodge Housing Scheme, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, yesterday and pleaded guilty to the charge that between July 29 and July 30, last, at Lodge Housing Scheme, Georgetown, he broke and enter the dwelling house of Shawn Ferguson and stole three television sets valued $416,996.
He also stole one play station game valued $116,000 and one radio valued $27,000.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore stated that Ferguson, on July 29, secured his premises and went to Essequibo Coast.
The court heard that on July 31 Ferguson received information that someone had broken into his house. On return to his premises he observed the articles mentioned in the charge, missing.
He then went and made a report to the East La penitence Police Station. Police acting on information, made contact with the accused and told him about the allegation.
The youth admitted to committing the offence in a caution statement and gave police information about where the stolen articles were hidden. The police acting on the information went to a location where they recovered one of the television sets
Prosecutor Moore told the court that Joshua Austin has several offences of similar nature in the court.
The court also heard that the accused served two jail terms for simple larceny offences. When given a chance to address the court the accused said “I was influenced by two other persons. One of them get the two televisions and the other one have the radio.”
The magistrate after sentencing the accused told him that he will get counselling in prison, and that he should use the two years to learn a skill so that when he comes out of jail he will be able to get a job and would not have to steal from persons.
Meanwhile in the same courtroom a miner was ordered to post $50,000 bail after he denied receiving stolen property.
Emanuel Darrel denied the charge which read that between July 29 and July 30 at Festival City, he received from Joshua Austin, one 49-inch television valued $146,000, knowing same to have been stolen or unlawfully obtain.
The defendant was represented by Attorney-at-Law Euclin Gomes, who asked that his client be released on reasonable bail since he has never been charged before.
Police Prosecutor Moore had no objection to bail being granted to the defendant but asked that it be substantial.
Darrel was ordered to make his next court appearance on August 10 for statements.
