Nine outstanding Berbicians and a vibrant sports organisation were honoured recently when the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, MS, and its eight Cricket Teams hosted the presentation Ceremony of the 5th Annual Gregory Gaskin Memorial Berbice Sports Award and the Ansa Mcal Award of Excellence Programmes. The two events were hosted by the eight teams at the St. Francis Community Developers Training Centre with Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Barton Scotland being the Guest Speaker.
The Gregory Gaskin Berbice Sports Award is held annually to honour the outstanding performers in Berbice Sports during a calendar year and also to provide positive role models for youths in the ancient county. West Indies female cricketer Shemaine Campbelle was named the Berbice Sportswoman of the Year 2016, while Outside hitter (spiker) Samuel Fraser was rewarded with the Berbice Sportsman of the Year Award, while the Berbice Volleyball Association was named the Sports Association of 2016 for its outstanding work in promoting the game in the ancient county. National Volleyball Coach Levi Nedd clinched the Berbice Sports Personality Award for 2016, while Football Coach and Administrator Kenrick Bowry collected the Sports Lifetime Award for his dedication to Football over the last two decades.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster congratulated the awardees and urged them to uphold their high standard while working hard every day to promote sports as an alternative to a life on the road for youths. Foster expressed gratitude to the Management of Sentinel Security especially CEO Noreen Gaskin for sponsoring the Award Scheme in memory of her late husband Gregory Gaskin, who was a strong advocate of sports.
Five outstanding Berbicians were honoured for their outstanding contributions to the development of Guyana and for being positive role models to youths under the Ansa Mcal Award of Excellence. Rhonda Trim-Russell was rewarded for her outstanding contribution towards the Health Sector, while Mrs. Jean Dorsett of No. 53 Village was awarded the Award of Excellence for Community Development. Cricket Coach and Administrator Albert Smith took home the Award of Excellence for Sports. Smith successfully coached Berbice and Guyana to numerous titles including the first ever Stanford 20/20 Championship in Antigua. Veteran Educator Catherine Archer was recognised for her outstanding contribution to molding the minds of youths and for her commitment to the educational sector even in retirement. Another Educator Ruth Jaundoo was also honoured and received the Award of Excellence for the promotion of Culture in Region 6. Each of the Awardees of the Gregory Gaskin Memorial Sports Award and the Ansa Mcal Award of Excellence Programmes received a trophy, medal, Certificate of Excellence and two special gifts.
Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Barton Scotland congratulated the awardees on being honoured and stated that Guyana is a better place to live in because of their services. The highly respected Attorney-at-Law also praised the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club for its dynamic contribution to Guyana and urged the club to share its formula for success to others across Guyana.
The awardees for both programmes were selected by a panel of judges headed by veteran News Editor, Gregory Rambarran based on recommendations made by members of the Berbice public.
