The police are investigating the death of a 42-year-old fisherman who was stabbed on Thursday night at the Meadow Bank Wharf, East Bank Demerara (EBD). The suspect was not apprehended.
The deceased has been identified as Chan Wen Wong of 14 Seaforth Street, Campbellville, Georgetown. He was stabbed to the chest and pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to information received, Wong and the suspect had an altercation which resulted in a physical confrontation.
The Guyana Police Force in a release said that based on investigation, the men were parted by onlookers and the victim walked away only to be pursued by the suspect who whipped out a sharp object and stabbed him.
The suspect, who goes by the nickname “Chokadag,” fled the scene.
When this newspaper visited the home of the deceased yesterday, no one was there. Neighbours said that a group of Chinese nationals lived at the address but were hardly there.
“They only come here to sleep. You don’t really see anyone but this morning (yesterday) one of them (Chinese men) say that they get robbed, but they hardly know English, so we didn’t really understand what he was saying,” the neighbour said.
Checks were made at two restaurants where the deceased was said to be working but this newspaper was informed that he had quit both jobs a while back.
Investigations are ongoing.
