A shipment of bike parts has sparked a police probe following the discovery of weapons
in a barrel yesterday.
According to officials, the guns and several rounds of matching ammunition were found stashed in the parts.
The discovery was made at the Guyana National Shipping Corporation (GNSC) wharf, Lombard Street, during a Customs check.
An official attached to a shipping agent has been since been assisting police with investigations, with police looking to talk to the consignee, said to be a woman.
According to information, the barrel was shipped from Brooklyn and arrived in Guyana sometime back.
A woman – the consignee – reportedly came to uplift it and during the routine Customs check, the bike parts were found in the barrel. The woman was asked to visit the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) to have shipment processed. However, she never returned.
Yesterday, the barrel was opened and during the checks, the guns, said to be four, were found. While reports were that the guns were high-powered ones, there was no police report to verify this.
GNSC bond operations were shut down around midday yesterday as investigators conducted their probe. Investigators were said to be attempting to locate the female consignee.
