A family of seven was spared the agony of being rendered homeless after fire broke out in the bottom flat of their home at lot 14-14 Norton Street Wortmanville.
A woman who resided in the upper flat of the building said just before 21:00hrs, she got a strong whiff of something burning and took it for nothing after she had checked to see if it was the generator which powered her home that was on fire. Little did she know that while she felt safe as it was not her home and had gone about her business, it was actually the bottom flat of her home where a blaze had already erupted.
She only became alert after neighbours shouted “fire”, and upon looking outside she realised that it was her sister Onika Vieira’s apartment that was on fire.
By then Dane St Hill, who resides two buildings west, had already noticed the smoke emanating from his neighbours’ apartment. He dropped his plate and swung into selfless action.
“All I saw was Dane run from he house and run in the yard and kick open the door,” one witness said.
It was St Hill’s quick thinking that led to others gaining access to the apartment and through a bucket brigade the fire was extinguished before the fire service arrived. However, even though the fire was put out, the damage was evident as the PVC ceiling had been destroyed as well as a few valuables including clothing and household items.
The lower flat was rendered inhabitable. The house was spared from total destruction, but Onika Vieira and her three children are now counting their losses. The woman admitted that her 17-year-old son was left at home and had momentarily stepped out leaving a lit candle which it is believed was the source of the flames that have altered their lives.
