Twenty-seven year-old Tecona Welcome yesterday made another appearance before Magistrate Alisha George in the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Courts to answer to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
Welcome, of 39 Austin Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on June 24, last, at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, she drove motor car PSS 7195 in a manner dangerous to the public causing the death of Debra Pompey.
The accused was represented by attorney Nigel Anthony, who told the court that his client is presently on bail for driving under the influence of alcohol. The lawyer added that his client is still grieving due to the fact that she lost a friend.
Anthony asked that his client be placed on reasonable bail, citing that she is not a flight risk and will return to court for the trial.
Police Prosecutor David Goodridge objected to bail being granted to the accused citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts. The prosecutor further told the court that the accused was instructed by police to report to the Sparendaam Police Station after she was granted bail for driving under the influence, but she failed to do so.
The prosecutor went on to tell the court that if bail is granted to the accused she will not return to court for the trial.
Magistrate George then granted bail to the accused in the sum of $ 500,000. Conditions to the bail are that the accused must lodge her passport and return to the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Courts on the second Friday of every month until the completion of the trial. She is expected to make her next court appearance on August 4.
According to reports, the accused was driving the aforementioned vehicle when she slammed into the Liliendaal Bridge, after she and a group of friends were returning from a bridal shower at the Giftland Mall.
Debra Pompey was killed and five other passengers were injured in the accident.
