A study conducted by the European Union. (EU) towards the rehabilitation of City Hall is expected to be completed by August.
European Union (EU) is providing technical support towards the rehabilitation of City hall.
The Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) had been in discussions with a delegation from the European Union (EU), to decide the way forward for the restoration of the 125-year-old structure.
M&CC officials had said that the unique structure, “one which has very intricate seams and movements, can only be restored with the advice of experts who worked on buildings of that kind, like the EU and the National Trust.
The nineteenth-century Gothic Revival building located on the corner of Regent Street and Avenue of the Republic in Georgetown, Guyana was designed by architect Reverend Ignatius Scoles in 1887, and was completed in June 1889. The building houses the offices of the Mayor, the City Council, and the City Engineer.
The EU and M&CC had signed a contract that will facilitate a study for a Comprehensive Restoration and Sustainable Conservation Management Plan for City Hall.
The contract which has been awarded to EURONET Consulting GEIE for Euro 279,196 (G$64M) was scheduled to be concluded by March/April 2017.
Two overseas-based consultants, an architect and an engineer from the United States and the Caribbean, have since visited Guyana and made recommendations to arrest the deterioration of the building.
During a press conference held recently EU Programme Manager, Odrian Hayes explained that the study is almost complete and is expected to be presented in August.
Last year, EU Ambassador Mr. Jernej Videti met with Mayor of Georgetown Patricia Chase Green and promised to reopen the tender process to give contractors the opportunity again to bid to repair City Hall.
Ambassador Videti noted the European Union is funding a restoration and conservation management plan that will guide the restoration and long-term preservation of City Hall.
Ambassador Videti posited that this study will also enable a transfer of know-how on how to correctly restore other monuments of historical and symbolic value in Guyana.
He noted that many other areas on which the two entities can collaborate, such as climate change, training in financial management and taxation, and the promotion of sustainable cities.
