The body of a pensioner was pulled from a trench on Mandela Avenue, adjacent to the East La Penitence Police Station around 13:00hrs yesterday.
The dead man has been identified as Mohim Rahim, called “Metal”. His last place of abode was the Palms on Brickdam, however he lived on the streets during his final days.
According to reports, the pensioner, who was intoxicated at the time, was sitting on the rail of the high bridge on Mandela Avenue when he toppled into the trench.
It is suspected that Rahim fell into the water on Friday night. His body was spotted by one of his drinking buddies from the Night Shelter which is located next to the East La Penitence Police Station around 10:00hrs yesterday.
The police will be reviewing Government CCTV in that area to determine how the pensioner ended up in the trench.
Kaieteur News was informed that the deceased’s friend, “Mamoo” went to the bridge and noticed Rahim’s cane. When the man peered into the trench, he saw his friend in the water. By the time the police responded, the body had already gone down into the water.
Reports are that the deceased was residing at the shelter next to the station but because he consumed alcohol daily, he was thrown out. He then went to the Palms from where he was also thrown out.
Residents in the area said that he begged at the stop light on Mandela Avenue. The body is at the Lyken Funeral Parlour.
