Dear Editor,
I have read the recent letter by the US Ambassador in Guyana, and was relieved and amused at the same time that the General Assembly of the OAS may be interested in “helping the Venezuelan people reclaim their democratic rights and power…” I thought “Right, the same as was done when they tried “to bring democracy to Iraq”!
Way back in the 1980s, having done some research, I thought Guyana would be far better off keeping away from powerful nations determined to ‘help’ the country to recover her fortunes. There were signs of being ‘gobbled up’ by the helpers, our poor, relatively unsophisticated country, unable to prevent it or to fight back.
My research suggests that Guyana is vulnerable to deceit and ructions from other countries in their offers of help. Instead, she may be better off seeing how such countries ‘perform’ elsewhere first. With best wishes to our South American neighbour.
