Dear Editor,
I have been watching with great interest the dynamics that are being played out in Region 5 at the Fort Wellington Hospital with the registered nurse, her functional superiors and the politicians. May I say at the outset that Ms. Marks should be commended for identifying the healthcare and administrative problems at the Fort Wellington Hospital. She was doing so in the best interest of the patient and the health care institution. Ms. Marks demonstrated that she is an embodiment of leadership, professionalism and competence. Being a competent and responsible nurse, she was adhering to the basic principles of the Dangerous Drug Act of 1919.
The problems (malpractice) were presented to the hierarchy of the Public Health Ministry, but they failed to acknowledge and address the issues that were raised. They became concerned when the matter was presented to the press. They panicked. As a healthcare professional I do not engage in debate with individuals, who are not medically trained. The regional executive officer, Mr. Morrison, a lay individual should not seek to pontificate in matters beyond his level of competence.
I do hope the prescribers of the medication (Pethidine) will be called in by the good offices of the Guyana Medical Council and the Chief Medical Officer and be questioned about their knowledge (competence) in the administration of the dangerous drug – Pethidine. With due respect to these gentlemen, I think they should be involved in a well structured intern and residency program supervised by competent skills with the likes of Dr. Carl Hanoman, Dr. Hugley Hanoman, Dr. Roger Luncheon, Dr. Dean Sharma, the late Dr. Enid Denbow, Dr. Walter Chin, Dr. Hamilton, Dr. Sookraj and Dr. Gordon Baird. Just to name a few.
I am calling on the nursing fraternity to rally around their colleague because a vital principle is at stake. If you do not stand up for something, then you will fall for anything. There are some principles that are non-negotiable. To Ms. Marks, I say stick to the principles of healthcare and don’t be moved by any bastardly acts of intimidation. I do hope the patient involved in this saga is referred for counselling and supervised care. All of which are vitally necessary for the total rehabilitation of the patient. The writer of this letter is a graduate from the New Amsterdam School of Nursing and has practiced nursing in the New York area in clinical and administrative areas in reputable teaching institutions.
