Almost a year after his sister was freed on a cocaine trafficking charge, Shafaur Alli was yesterday freed of the same charge after Magistrate Leron Daly ruled that there was insufficient evidence to prove he had physical or constructive
control of the drug.
It was alleged that on June 8, last year, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Alli, 28, of La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara, had 9.044 kilograms of cocaine in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Court facts had revealed that Alli and his sister, Lazeena Imrazie, upon arrival at the airport, declared 33 boxes of fish to be exported. The boxes were searched by ranks of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) and the cocaine was found concealed in the fish.
Alli was represented by Attorney-at-Law, Bernard Da Silva, throughout the trial. He was jointly charged with his sister but the charges were dismissed against her August last year.
Another man, Tazim Gafoor, of Menzies Street, Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara was also charged in relation to this cocaine bust.
On June 8, 2016 at Craig, East Bank Demerara, he allegedly attempted to pervert the course of justice by attempting to secure the release of the narcotics that was seized.
It was revealed that Gafoor attempted to bribe the police during a sting operation.
It is unclear what the outcome of this matter was.
Gafoor is presently on remanded over a $550M cocaine in lumber bust made by CANU earlier this year at a sawmill located at Lookout, East Bank Essequibo and belonging to Narine Lall.
