The Tobacco Control Bill 2017 was read for the first time and laid in the National Assembly yesterday
by Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence.
Lawrence reminded that the purpose of the Tobacco Control Act 2016 is to fight the tobacco epidemic by implementing the evidence-based requirements of the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), to which Guyana acceded on September 15, 2005.
The Bill, she noted, now seeks to provide for the adoption and implementation of tobacco control policies in accordance with the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
The WHO Framework aims to accomplish a number of things, including protection of present and future generations from the devastating harms of tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke; prevention of tobacco use by minors; protection of workers and the public from exposure to tobacco smoke; and the prevention of exposure of the public especially minors, to tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship.
