Five overhead walkways planned for the East Bank of Demerara will include the presence of elevators too.
The contracts have already been awarded, with work started on the ones in Providence and at Diamond. Those two are the responsibility of S. Jagmohan Hardware Supplies and Constructing Services.
At Providence, to prevent congestion on the busy highway, the contractor worked all Friday night to drive piles at the median and two sides of the road, south-west of the Princess Hotel.
According to a spokesman of the contractor, the workers braved the rain Friday night to drive the timber foundation piles.
The overhead walkways at Providence and Diamond will be built at $77M each.
The general scope of work involves a super structure of steel and will be fully enclosed to prevent persons from falling or jumping from it. There will be steps from both the western and eastern sides. It will also include elevators for persons who are physically challenged.
The contractor said that they have been given until mid-November to complete the two overhead walkways.
The contracts for the other three walkways – at Houston, Eccles and Peter’s Hall – have been awarded to B and A Civil Works.
