A 42-year-old housewife yesterday made an appearance before City Magistrate Fabayo Azore and was remanded to prison on a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Yonette Bascom of 36 Sussex Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, denied the charge which alleged that on June 7, last, at Charlestown, she had 470 grams of Cannabis sativa in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Police Prosecutor Simone Payne objected to bail being granted. The court heard that on the day in question, a party of policemen, acting on information, went to the defendant’s home. The ranks conducted searches on two buildings in the yard.
The court heard that when the defendant arrived home, she met with the police officers who were conducting a search at a house located in front of the yard, and they then proceeded to search her apartment which is located at the back. The court heard that the search was conducted in the presence of the defendant.
While conducting their search, the ranks found a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be Cannabis sativa. Twenty-six grams of the drug were reportedly found in a bag in the defendant’s bedroom and a total of 444 grams were allegedly found in a garbage bin in the kitchen. She was then arrested and charged.
Bascom’s attorney, in his application to secure bail for his client, argued that the property in which the narcotics were found is occupied by multiple parties. The attorney went on to tell the court that the properties are on an open lot, and the narcotics could have belonged to anyone, since the houses are not secured with a fence.
The prosecution’s objection was upheld by the magistrate and the defendant was remanded to prison. She will make her next court appearance on June 22.
