The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) is leaving no stone unturned when it comes to clamping down on a notorious number plate racket.
According to GRA Commissioner-General, Godfrey Statia, moves have already been made to engage the attention of the Guyana Police Force on the racket.
Statia recalled his earlier statement to this newspaper that over 1000 vehicles have entered Guyana from Brazil and Suriname with foreign number plates, but months later, they cannot be traced.
Statia confirmed that the Authority’s investigations indicate that there has been the recycling of local number plates to disguise the ones coming in. He said that efforts will have to be made for the Authority to work with the Guyana Police Force to ensure that number plates are not recycled from vehicles which have been involved in car accidents and ‘written off’.
The GRA Boss even provided members of the media fraternity with a personal experience, regarding the “number plate culture.” He explained that a few months ago, one of the vehicles assigned to him got into an accident. He related that one of his staff members went to Suriname, got a replacement, and removed the number plate from his old vehicle and planted it on the new one.
Of course the employee was fired for the illegal act, but Statia stressed that the point of the example was to explain “the society in which we live.”
The GRA Boss said that the way forward will have to include increased checks on warehouses and working along with the Guyana Police Force. With respect to the latter agency, Statia said that GRA has already requested information on vehicles that have been written-off.
He said, too, that efforts will have to include working along with the entity’s Surinamese counterparts for information on vehicles which have left the Dutch-speaking nation for Guyana, but did not return.
Statia stressed that all vehicles, regardless of the industry they are being used in, must be registered. He insisted that practices to the contrary, rob the state of the requisite taxes. The GRA boss emphasized that the Authority will work feverishly towards bringing an end to this scheme. (Kiana Wilburg)
