Dear Editor,
The process of obtaining a driver’s licence in Guyana is beyond the normal procedure expected, the process is as follows;
1. An individual have to buy a package
2. Study the package for one month
3. Attend four one hour classes within two weeks
4. Write an exam one week later
5. Wait for results to be posted to your house
6. Then attempt the driving practical.
Estimated time to accomplish this task is four months, only in Guyana can such an important item take so long, where else in the world is this such a lengthy process. Besides the process being long, the officials responsible for issuing such licences are “professional” in the manner in which they exercise their duties; candidates are called upon to write their names in pencil, not pen or it is an automatic failure, insufficient teaching material and instructor teaching, high rate of failures and possible selling of pass grades. Can this be because the responsible officials are overworked, tired, under trained or just careless in carrying out their duties? Are past exam papers being sold to candidates who are unable to read and write.
Can the process time frame be shortened and the class room training time be extended to eight hours? Is this the reason for the high number of road incidents and fatalities? When the above questions can be answered, we will solve many issues with obtaining a driver’s licence and a reduction in road incidents, loss of limbs and lives will follow. All for your information and guidance
