Dear Editor,
It is with a breath of relief that the junior and senior ranks of ‘A’ Division have a new Commander. Assistant Commissioner, Marlon Chapman, has opened his doors to ranks that have been waiting for a chance to really feel as though they are a part of the Guyana Police Force. Mr. Editor, as you know, the police, in especially in the city, has over time been under significant pressure to fight crime.
The ‘A’ Division includes not only the city of Georgetown by also the challenging East Bank Demerara.
In the past few years, ranks in addition to fighting crimes were forced to conduct fund-raising activities for the top brass, in essence placing them in obvious compromising situations. They were under pressure to ask businesses for cash donations, and even food stuff. When there were youth camps, minibuses were cajoled to take persons to the highway. Maybe that is why many of the minibus drivers can feel as if they can do whatever they want.
The same goes for some businesses who contributed. Some of them became untouchables. Many were scared to speak out for fear of victimization.
Today, the new Commander who is well experienced has introduced an open-door policy, allowing all and sundry- from junior to senior officers to speak with him. This is what our force needs. This is what it has been crying out for.
Ranks are feeling more motivated now. The other divisions should take a page out of the Assistant Commissioner’s book on how to motivate staff.
We, the junior and senior staffers, salute you, sir, for a new air over Brickdam.
