In a developing story, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) yesterday issued a statement indicating that the soldier who was on Monday charged for the murder of bread vendor, Andre Alexander on May 5, last, was dismissed prior to the killing.
In fact, 20-year-old Shaqeil Grant was let go just four days before the father of two was shot once to the stomach during a robbery at his bread stand located in ‘C’ Field Sophia, Georgetown. He was on Monday remanded to prison for the murder of Alexander.
The Army statement said, “The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) wishes to advise that 23239 Private Shaqeil Grant was dismissed from the Force, with effect from May 1, 2017.”
While the ex-soldier was charged, the police are still hunting for the suspected trigger man and hoping to locate the CG bike that was used to transport the killers to the scene. It is suspected that the motorcycle belongs to the ex-soldier.
Alexander was shot in the stomach by one of two gunmen on a motorcycle two Fridays ago. The former GDF rank was arrested after the cops received a tip-off of his involvement in the robbery. The description the police received of one of the gunmen matched that of the ex-soldier. He was also identified by eyewitnesses.
The 20-year-old Section ‘B’ Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara (ECD) resident and an 18-year-old were arrested along with three other Sophia residents, but only the soldier was charged.
Alexander, of Lot 394 ‘C’ Field Sophia, died around 23:00 hrs during surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital. The attack occurred around 20.30 hrs at the victim’s bread stand, which is situated about four doors from his home.
Police said that Alexander was at his bread stand when the two men rode up on a motorcycle. The pillion rider requested three loaves of bread and paid with a $5000 note.
Kaieteur News understands that while Alexander was in the process of making change, the ‘customer’ whipped out a gun and demanded cash. When Alexander put up a fight, the robber discharged two rounds, one of which struck the vendor in the stomach.
The two men relieved their victim of his cash and also escaped with three loaves of bread.
Alexander was rushed to the hospital where he subsequently succumbed.
