Season 2 of the Stag Elite League ended on a high for Fruta Conquerors who were finally able to defeat league winners the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on a soggy GDF field on Sunday night last.
The Tucville boys were not going to lose their fourth straight match to the Soldiers and they contrived to spoil the home team’s quest of ending unbeaten by triumphing, 2-1 in a keen tussle despite the wet nature of the pitch which had puddles of water due to early morning and evening rain. Despite the win, Conquerors ended in second place to the GDF.
In the main supporting match, Buxton United were held to a 3-3 draw by Topp XX which meant they had to settle for the fourth place with Topp XX ending in the penultimate position.
The day commenced with Victoria Kings notching up their fourth win of the league, a 2-1 win over Monedderlust, which saw them cantering to the third position, a single point ahead of Buxton.
Conquerors and the GDF’s ongoing friendly feud saw both sides going after each other in free flowing exchanges which was at times hampered by water trapping the ball and players not being able to exert full control.
The water hampered the GDF from equalising in the second half with the opposition defence and goalkeeper already beaten. It was the Fruta boys which would take the lead through a well executed shot from the leading marksman, Eon Alleyne in the 27th minute; it was Alleyne’s 7th goal of the league.
The GDF’s and SEL’s most prolific scorer, Sherwin Caesar who has ended the season with 10 goals, an average of one goal per match, brought his team level in the 44th minute to settle the nerves of many, while brining parity to the score line.
Alleyne and Caesar were clearly the main weapons on either side of the field throughout the match. But it was the Conquerors who were to come out smiling by the end of the 90 minutes battle.
Like he did in their previous match against Buxton, which they won 2-0, elder statesman Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams vindicated his Coaches faith in him coming on as a substitute and delivering the goods.
It was Abrams, who after being introduced in the 65th minute who fashioned the winning goal three minutes after coming on, he did the same four minutes after coming on against Buxton.
Try as they did, the GDF dug deep in their quest to even the score but they never did as Conquerors bagged full points, exacting revenge on the Army.
Buxton United wasted at least half a dozen chances to nail Topp XX in the first half, and as often happens, their missed opportunities came back to haunt them as the Linden side grew in confidence with every passing minute.
With four minutes to game time and the score in favour of Buxton 3-2, Topp were awarded a penalty which many felt should not have been, the ensuing shot was buried by Monty Simon in the process it earned Topp XX its second draw of the season.
The now relegated Monedderlust suffered their ninth loss in ten matches when they went down to Victoria Kings 1-2.
Tichard Joseph and Akeem Holder converted in the 41st and 45th minute respectively for the Kings.
Monedderlust’ consolation goal at the end of a miserable season for them was converted by Nicholas Rodney two minutes into the second half.
Ahead of Season 3 of the SEL, the four teams, GDF, Conquerors, Victoria Kings and Buxton United will face off in the Big Four Tournament; no confirmed dates have been fixed.
