Two years after entering office, vowing reforms to reduce corruption and waste, the Coalition Government believes it has done well.
This was communicated in a two-page paid advertisement in the local media, outlining
the administration’s “over 150 achievements in two years”.
The highlighted feats include the lowering of the Berbice Bridge tolls, a cleaner city, holding Local Government Elections – for the first time in more than two decades, less piracy and more transparency.
But Leader of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo, feels these achievements are “farcical” and is questioning where the government’s failures are. He opined that despite the utterances and publicised achievements, Guyanese are still feeling the squeeze.
During a press conference at his Church Street Office yesterday, the former President told media operatives: “We can talk a lot about it (achievements) but only the people can say whether their lives were better two years ago or (if) it has changed for the worse…The ordinary people can tell you frankly that their lives have changed for the worse in just two years of this government and it is not going to get better…All they’re (Government) selling now are promises of a better future,” Jagdeo said.
Jagdeo labelled the achievements as an attempt to “cover up’ failure.
“You can all agree with me – the entire country – that it’s not only ludicrous, farcical (and) absurd, the things that they put there, but (it) is designed to cover-up a government that has been in office for over two years now, and has failed miserably.
“And so, if I had to candidly characterise this government, I’d say it has been a masterpiece of incompetence that we have a cabinet that is constantly in a mess. Confusion and disarray characterises most of their actions. In fact, many of the things they say and do are often contradictory to their stated objectives.”
Jagdeo said the advertisement, “at the end the day, means nothing to the people. This means nothing to them and their lives.”
He spoke about the ‘precipitous decline’ in the sectors of Guyana’s economy and accused the government of manufacturing excuses, saying that it is “the only thing the government is manufacturing”.
“One time it is the drug money that is causing the decline because they’re cleaning our drug money. The next week or the next month it’s the other countries in the Caribbean are also in a state of decline. The last creative excuse they came up with is that the PPP has been sabotaging their progress. Of course, these are all excuses to hide their incompetence,” Jagdeo charged.
The Opposition Leader said that his party estimates that some 10,000 people have already lost their jobs with another 10,000 when the reforms take effect in the sugar industry and other sectors.
Another 10,000 jobs will be lost he added, when the tax measures “kick in”.
