Guyana’s ‘Simon Pures’ clinch accolades to cart off the honours
By Michael Benjamin
They had a disappointing start after losing both of their
bouts on the inaugural night, but Guyanese boxers recovered remarkably and eventually scooped in 6 Gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals and were duly declared champions when the 3rd edition of the Caribbean Youth, School Boys and Junior boxing championships concluded at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue on Sunday night.
Guyana’s strongest rivals, Trinidad and Tobago, turned in a special performance and finished second with 4 gold and 4 bronze medals. Trinidad and Tobago also retained some pride when their 73kgs representative, Nickel Joseph, was adjudged best (Youth) boxer. Joseph had a good tournament and had defeated Akeel Mounter by TKO on the inaugural night before replicating the feat with a similar victory over Jamaican Jerone Innis on Sunday evening.
Guyanese, Leon Moore fought in the Youth category and won his bout against Trinidadian, Tyrique Hosein in the semi-final to be adjudged Best Boxer in his category. Shaquile Wright stopped Blessing Waldropt (T&T) in 2nd round of their 57kgs (Junior) bout and the Guyanese was eventually adjudged the best boxer in his category.
Travis Invery fought his countryman, Jakeel Cadogan, in an all local bout on the inaugural night and earned a points decision. He was duly declared the Most Disciplined boxer for his efforts.
Meanwhile, in final night action, Shaquille Wright utilized just 1:49secs to dispose of Blessing Waldropt of Trinidad and Tobago and cart off the gold medal in the 57kgs (junior) division. Wright rushed out at the first bell and pushed his opponent back with a volley of punches which forced the referee to institute the mandatory 8 count. Wright then pursued his man while attempting to finish him off but Waldropt valiantly fought back with crisp right crosses.
Not to be undone, the Guyanese upped the ante in the second frame and had the Trinidadian blocking up from a sustained assault.
The referee allowed it for a while before effecting the count on Waldropt. Upon resumption, Wright scored with another combination that rocked his man before the referee once again tolled away the count and then waved the contest off.
Guyanese, Brian Harris also benefitted from a decision by the referee to halt his 75kgs (Junior) contest against Barbadian, Dario Cheeseman. Intent on inflicting as much pain as possible, both boxers served up wild swings in an effort to establish control. Harris adapted a more controlled offensive in the second round and forced the referee to count his opponent early in that round. He then bullied the Barbadian into one of the neutral corners before pummeling him into submission; the referee’s mandatory 8 count was merely an academic gesture and the bell sounded simultaneously with the stoppage.
Jamaica started the night on a successful note when their 63kgs (Junior) representative, Rushwan McKinney, pummeled Barbadian, Donte Powlette, into submission for the referee to terminate the action at 1:30secs of the second round. Denzell Massey (T&T) and Tevin Brewster (Bar) were constantly warned by the referee after both failed in ‘get it on’ in their 63kgs (Junior) affair. In the end the Trinidadian drummed up enough courage to stitch in a few decisive blows that earned him the verdict.
St Lucian, Nathan Ferarri, did his country proud when he pounded out a unanimous points verdict over Jamaican, Danil Hylton in a keenly contested affair in the 64kgs (Youth) affair that brought the curtains down on three nights of fistic entertainment.
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
