Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Shalimar Ali-Hack will soon decide on the fate of a police constable who stole a motorcycle that was lodged at the Grove Police Station on Sunday night.
A police source said that the rank is still under close arrest, while the file has been sent to the DPP for advice.
“The file should be returned to us anytime and he will be charged,” the rank stated.
Kaieteur News understands that the motorcycle was pulled into the station by traffic ranks after it was reported to have been stolen.
The cycle was being stored in the station compound as the matter was being investigated.
According to reports received, early Sunday, the rank in question, asked the officer in charge of the station for time off. He was then seen pushing the bike out of the station compound where he then started it without keys and subsequently rode away.
A junior rank, who witnessed his colleague leaving with the exhibit, allegedly notified the senior officer, who then sent a message to the Brickdam Police Station.
Reports are that ranks first tried to call the constable on his phone and when he did not answer, they went to his home but he was not there. He was however seen riding the motorcycle on the West Bank Demerara. A police rank said when a patrol vehicle tried to stop him, he sped away, but was subsequently arrested and taken to the Grove Police Station.
Charges will most likely be instituted on Monday.
