A 62-year-old labourer of Crabwood Creek was yesterday remanded to prison for
the murder of his wife.
Rishee Lakhraj, of Grant 1803 Crabwood Creek appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Alex Moore, to answer to the charge of murder, caused by a single stab wound to his wife’s abdomen.
It is alleged that between May 5th and 8th last, Lakhraj murdered Chanmonie Charlie aka ‘Pelo’ at their Crabwood Creek home. He was remanded to prison until June 5th.
The matter is expected to be called next week at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before the Chief Magistrate.
According to initial reports, on Friday May 5th, 2017, Lakhraj along with Charlie were at their Crabwood Creek home when an argument developed, it was alleged that Charlie plunged a knife into her own abdomen after the argument with her husband. She was taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital for medical examination and treatment the following day, but relatives had told reporters that the doctors at the Skeldon Hospital did not inspect and treat the wound but administered an injection, gave her tablets and sent her away. Charlie succumbed to her injury on Monday last.
Meanwhile, Lakhraj who was arrested over the weekend under intense interrogation reportedly confessed to stabbing his wife. Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed with this publication that during the confession, Lakhraj told investigators that himself and Charlie were imbibing in some “white rum” when an argument erupted, the argument reportedly spun out of control and Lakhraj stated that he retreated to the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and dealt Charlie a stab to the abdomen.
After committing the act, he then told his wife not to tell anyone what he had done, she subsequently agreed to cover for Lakhraj, since she told relatives that she had stabbed herself. The man also told investigators that he had contemplated suicide after realizing what he had done.
A post mortem examination conducted on the body of Chanmonie Charlie revealed that she died from Acute peritonitis and a stab wound to the abdomen wall.
