Two young men , Tharam Persaud, 21, and a 16-year-old, of Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice, have been handed custodial sentences after they were found guilty of assault with intention to rob.
Yougindranauth Tirbeni, also known as Chiney , is a pensioner who occupies a two-storey building at Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice. He lives alone. On January 24, last, about 18:45 hours, Chiney was about to lock up his premises when there was a power outage. The home owner, instead of continuing to lock up, went to the front of the yard, leaving the door opened.
The power was restored shortly afterward, but Chiney was not prepared for what confronted him when he returned to resume securing his property. There was a young man, whom he recognized, descending the interior stairway. The young man swiftly set upon him raining blows, and trying to subdue him at the same time.
This young man, who was later labeled the number two accused, was immediately joined by the number one accused, but their blows only strengthened the resolve of the home owner whose cry for help quickly got the attention of neighbors who immediately summoned the police. The response was prompt, and the number one accused was apprehended while fleeing the scene. He in turn informed the police as to who was his accomplice.
Tharam Persaud, 21, and the 16-year-old were subsequently charged with assaulting Chiney with intention to rob him. Both men lived within close proximity to the victim, and they are known to him. Both men were found guilty. Persaud, the number one accused, was sentenced to three years in prison when the matter was called on May 4.
The teen will spend the next two years at the New Opportunity Corps in Essequibo.
According to probation reports, Persaud has been out of control at home with no respect for anyone. Family members are even reported to be afraid of him. He was charged by the police in January 2014, and August 2015, accused of break and enter, but both matters were dismissed because of lack of evidence.
The teen, on the other hand, was reported to be lacking structure within his home circle, and stands to benefit from time spent at the NOC.
