Raul Leal and Walter-Grant Stuart were crowned cycling champions when Boyce and
Jefford held their relay festival and family fund day at Police Sports Club, Eve Leary on Sunday.
Leal used his experience well to win the 3000m mountain bike event, while Stuart rode brilliantly to capture the 5000m. Leal, Ozia Mc Aulay and Keon Thomas dominated much of the proceedings in the 3000m, but Leal proved too good at the finish line. Mc Aulay placed second while Thomas finished third followed by Julio Melville, Mario King and Seon Budhan in that order. Leal pocketed $25,000, Mc Aulay $20,000, Thomas $15,000, Melville $12,000, King $10,000 and Budhan $8,000.
However, it was Stuart win of the men’s 5000m cycle race that really got the crowd animated as they unanimously backed the one-handed cyclist.
The differently-abled athlete commenced the race with a 200m head start over his competitors, and that was more than what he needed as he maintained the lead throughout the race.
As Stuart gained momentum and began lapping a number of his opponents the crowd became
even more enthused to see him succeed and many were on their feet as they cheered him on, breaking out in resounding applause after he rode down his final lap and took the win. Leal took the runner up spot, while Mc Aulay placed third, Thomas fourth and Alonzo Ambrose fifth. Stuart took home $25,000, Leal $15,000 and Mc Aulay $10,000. Stuart received an extra $25,000 for his efforts. Both races were sponsored by former national cyclist Jude Bentley.
