Guyana’s three representatives in the Under-23 segment of the 32nd Pan-American Road Cycling Championships, which took place at the Mirador Sur Park, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, yesterday, all did well despite
not being able to command any podium spots.
Coach of the Team in Santo Domingo, Joseph Britton, where Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) President Horace Burrowes is also present, informed that the riders did excellent given the fact that they held their own coming against the best age group riders from some of the leading nations in the world.
From a field of 70 starters, Hamza Eastman ended in 20th place, Jamal John was 36th with Andrew Hicks ending 69th owing to cramps which robbed him of even challenging for a top three position.
According to Britton, Hicks broke away on the 5th lap of the 10Km circuit along with about a dozen other riders. With two laps to go in the 14-lap contest, Hicks started cramping up which severely curtailed his ability to compete for a top spot.
He mustered the will and eventually crossed the line in the 69th position after being caught.
The two riders contesting the elite race, a 170km battle today, Paul DeNobrega and Junior Niles will take center stage on the same circuit.
Winner of the U23 race yesterday was Alejandro Munoz of Chile who completed the distance in 3:16.12. Nicolas Tivani of Argentina, Alfredo Santoyo of Mexico, David Pita of Ecuador and Brazil’s Caio Godoy copped the 2nd to 5th places.
Asked to offer a comment on the performance of the Guyanese, Britton stated that he was pleased with the way the young Guyanese riders applied themselves given the fact that they were competing against the best in the continent.
”Our guys performed excellently given the caliber of riders here, Guyana fought to the end in all fourteen laps. It was the last two laps that the split came, the average speed was 42.813 per lap and Guyana rallied and was there through the entire race.”
The participation of the Guyana team in Santo Domingo has been due in part to the contributions of Hadi’s World, Marics and Farfan & Mendes.
Meanwhile, President of the International Cycling Union (UCI), Brian Cookson is in Santo Domingo witnessing the events, competition got underway on Friday with male and female time trials.
And in an unfortunate and tragic accident, Mechanic of the Cuban team, Juan Fernández González was involved in a collision on Friday following which he passed away.
