With the already financially burdened sugar Industry, GUYSUCO is now dealing with another tragedy after the Albion Estate Senior Staff Club went up in flames early Wednesday morning. The building which is located inside the
Estates Compound was conjoined with the guest house. That guest house, however, was saved as firefighters battled to tame the flames emitting from the Club Bar in the upper flat.
A security guard, Alvin Indardat, who was at the scene when the fire began told reporters that it was approximately 4:30 hrs he was patrolling the compound when he noticed smoke coming from Albion Estate direction located south-west from where he was standing, “I saw smoke but I thought was the factory. When I take a second look I saw it was coming from the building so I rushed to the scene. There I saw a set of smoke coming from the roof area. I went to the main gate and contacted the security office to make contact with the factory,” Indardat, said.
He stated that the Albion Estate Fire tender was summoned and upon arrival approximately 15 minutes after the inferno begun. The New Amsterdam and Rose Hall fire service were also contacted; they all arrived shortly after.
The fire service managed to save a section of the building which houses the guest rooms and the dining room. The storage area in the bottom front flat, the Club bar in the upper flat and the kitchen in the lower flat were all consumed by the fire.
According to a source the fire is said to have been electrical in origin. It is also said to have begun in the bar area. Millions of dollars were estimated in losses.
A senior official at the Estate told this publication via telephone that “this is a huge loss for us, given the fact that we are already cash strapped, it doesn’t seem like this will be rebuilt anytime soon.”
