The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), the incumbent trade union representing junior staffers of the Mahaica Mahaicony Abary/Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA) at Onverwagt, has been rejected in a recent poll.
According to the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) yesterday, for too long the workers complained about not being properly represented by their union –GAWU- and that they wanted a change.
“They approached the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) for help. Even though the GPSU was not the recognized union, the GPSU successfully represented them in getting the 10 percent differentiated increase announced in 2016 and the $25,000 bonus paid in December, 2016 among other benefits.”
GPSU said it then applied to the Trade Union Recognition and Certification Board for recognition to represent the workforce of MMA/ADA and after many setbacks a poll was set for 3rd April, 2017.
Of 105 qualified workers, 68 voted with 56 of them giving their nod to GPSU. Eleven of them went back with GAWU with one vote spoilt.
