Limping as a result of a cast on his left leg, Nykoseye Gritten, who was shot last Friday by police made his appearance in court. The police had chased him down after he allegedly robbed a man at Kitty, Georgetown.
Gritten, 23, of Lot 29 Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan and pleaded not guilty to a robbery under arms charge.
He was remanded to prison.
On April 21, last, he allegedly robbed Gunpat Seepersaud of a bottle of nail polish, a loaf of bread, $400,000 cash, two DVD’s, a haversack and a pair of boots.
It was further alleged that he robbed the man of a quantity of clothing, a bottle of lotion and a bottle of spray, property of Pertab Kumar.
According to reports, Gritten was shot to the foot by police after he and an accomplice robbed the man. It was reported that the man was about to open his gate when he was confronted by the bandits who held him at gunpoint before relieving him of valuables.
Police were alerted and pursued the bandits. They shot at police who returned fire hitting one of them. The other bandit escaped. Police said that a portion of the loot was recovered in the injured bandit’s possession.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore told the court that Gritten trailed Seepersaud on a motorcycle. Police were contacted and gave chase after the defendant shot at the police. The police returned fire, shooting Gritten to the foot at Laing Avenue, the prosecutor disclosed. Prosecutor Moore said that a gun was found in the defendant’s possession.
Attorney Stanley Moore told the court that his client was arrested while cutting his hair in the barber shop. According to the prosecutor, his client sustained injuries and as a result is immobile.
