The Cricket teams of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, M.S on Sunday
last became the first organisation to honour Shimron Hetemyer on his achievement on becoming Berbice’s 18th Test Cricketer. The teams also honoured four coaches for their outstanding contribution towards the development of the gentleman’s game in Berbice and Guyana.
Twenty years old Hetemyer made his Test Debut on Friday 2017-05-20 against Pakistan in Jamaica and Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster stated that the Club was delighted to honour him a mere three days after his debut. The Club was also the first organisations to assist Hetemyer with cricket gears, seven years ago under its Basil Butcher Cricket Development Trust Fund. The Veteran Cricket Official urged Hetemyer’s Parents who represented him to make sure that the young cricketer remains disciplined, focused and most importantly grounded as most young cricketers tends to become affected by early fame.
The RHTY&SC presented Hetemyer with a framed certificate, trophy and medal as souvenirs for his debut. He joined the elite list of Berbice Test Cricketers that includes John Trim, Rohan Kanhai, Basil Butcher, Joe Soloman, Ivan Madray, Roy Fredericks, Alvin Kallicharran, Sew Shivnarine, Clayton Lambert, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Narsingh Deonarine, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Brandon Bess, Devendra Bishoo, Assad Fudadin and Veerasammy Permaul. Foster expressed disappointment that the Berbice Cricket Board to date has not extended any congrats to Hetemyer.
The four Cricket Coaches honoured under the Club’s Tribute to Coaches Programme were Senior National Cricket Coach Esuan Crandon, National Female Coach Andre Percival, National Under-15 Coach Julian Moore and RHTY&SC Senior Coach Delbert Hicks. Percival was honoured for his commitment towards female cricket in Berbice and Guyana, Crandon, a product of the RHTY&SC, was honoured for coaching Guyana to back to back three successive regional first class cricket titles, while Moore was recognised for leading Guyana to two consecutive regional Under-15 titles. Hicks, the head of the RHTY&SC Coaching staff, was honoured for the outstanding role he has played in nurturing the talent of the Club’s junior cricketers that includes Kevlon Anderson, Chanderpaul Govindan, Slyus Tyndall, Kevin Sinclair, Mahendra Gopilall, Plaffina Millington, Shenneta Grimmond and Marian Samaroo among others.
The Secretary/CEO on behalf of the Club urged the Cricket Coaches to uphold their high standards and to remain committed to their coaching jobs. The honouring of Hetemyer and the coaches were organised by the Farfan and Mendes Under-15, Bakewell Under-17 and Second Division, Pepsi Under-19 and Intermediate, Metro Females and Gizmos and Gadgets Under-21 and First Division teams.
