Balkishun’ all round showing give Dem win against Nat U-15s
By Sean Devers
Alex Algoo’s 81 and 4-21 from Gavon Shultz spearheaded Berbice to a 115-run victory over
Essequibo at Everest, while useful all-round work from Pradesh Balkishun led defending champions Demerara to a 20-run win against the National U-15s at Bourda when the GCB’s Igloo Ice Cream U-17 Inter-County 50 overs cricket tournament bowled off yesterday.
In the more competitive game yesterday, the home team, who left out the National U-17 pair of Sachin Singh and Ashmead Nedd for turning up late, were restricted to 168-9 when their 50 overs expired in sunny conditions.
Hemnauth Dindyal (25 from 82 balls), Jerimiah Scott (22), Balkishun (18), Navindra Persaud (17), Alphius Bookie (13) and Andre Samaroo (13*) all failed to build on good starts.
Sheldon Charles (3-40) and Hemraj Harrilall (2-26) took the bulk of the wickets on a slow track but all of the other six bowlers used by National U-15s were economical.
Tight Demerara bowling combined with erratic running between the wickets and inability to rotate the strike or hit boundaries kept batsmen in shackles but the youngsters managed to bat for 49.4 overs until Gavrau Ramesh became the fifth batsman to be run out to end the game with the score on 148.
Ricardo Ramdehol top-scored with 43 with five fours but his painstaking innings took 98 balls, while Sheldon Charles laboured for 70 balls in his 22. Mark Ramanand laboured for 42 balls and stuck his only boundary off his 41st delivery in his pedestrian paced 16.
After Rajendra Singh (5) fell to Travon Charles at 19-1, Persaud and Bookie added 39 for the second wicket before Bookie departed, while Balkishun was run out at 80-4 just when he was beginning to flow.
Dindyal and Scott repaired the damage with a 37-run stand before the hosts lost their next six wickets for 57 runs.
When the U-15s began their reply Ramdehol pivoted and pulled Diquan Bamfield for two boundaries, while his third boundary was off the edge to third man off the impressive Torrington.
Shemar Yearwood (12) played some attractive drives before spooning a catch off Balkishun, who also removed Ramdehol after he had pulled a full toss from Samaroo for four to post the 50 in 20 overs, to leave the score 86-2.
Sheldon Charles, struggling to get the ball off the square, broke the shackles with two swept boundaries off Dindyal and when Charles was LBW to Kester McAllister 91-5, the innings went into terminal decline.
Seepersaud was looking positive before he was run out for four from six balls at 96-6 in a terrible mix-up with Ramanand, who was eating up ‘dot’ balls.
Seepersaud was stranded at mid pitch after Ramanand refused a very tight single but instead of sacrificing his wicket in the interest of his team he darted for his own crease.
Davanand Kemraj was also looking good in a run-a-ball 16 and again Ramanand refused a suicidal single but with Ramanand in a ‘rut’ and Kemraj just being to flow, Ramanand again elected not to sacrifice his wicket and the run out left the score on 121-7.
Ironically, with the run rate escalating, Ramanand was run out in a mix-up with Trevon Charles (11 not out) before Harrilall was bowled for a duck by the lively Qumar Torrington before the match ended with another run out. Man-of-the-Match Balkishun, finished with 2-12 from 10 overs, while McAllister also picked up to wickets
At Everest, Man-of-the-Match Algoo’s attractive 81 included five fours and two sixes. He got support from Gavon Shultz (32) and Kelvin Omroa (26) as they rallied Berbice to 215 after Algoo and Omroa had shared in a 47-run fifth wicket partnership.
Reaz Khan (2-51), Lance Roberts (2-22) and Badesh Parsotan (2-33) did the damage for Essequibo who fell for 100 despite 28 from Roberts and 20 from Devendra Mohan.
Shultz returned with the ball to capture 4-21 and got assistance from Nigel Deodat (2-28) and Omroa (3-2).
The second round of the competition is set for tomorrow from 09:30hrs.
