The semi finals of the CBR Hotshots Stagbowl Football Tournament saw two nail
biting matches at the McKenzie Sports Club Ground Monday night. The first game pitted Silvertown/Canvas City/West Watooka combined and Wisroc/Block 22.
The players from both teams seemed determined to win, missing some goals but the breaker came in the 17th minute off the boot of Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson in favour of Wisroc/Block 22 to loud cheers from their supporters. Silvertown tried to equalize had some wide shots on goal and the goalkeeper seemed too good for Silvertown combined, saving two well placed goals. The first half ended 1 nil in favour of Wisroc/Block 22.
From the sound of the whistle at the beginning of the second half it was evident that the combined team were all out to score goals and were sending balls all over the crossbar and wide of the goal post. However, in the 67th minute Tony Adams scored the equalizer and the score remained the same until the end of regulation time.
The game went into 20 mins overtime and the score remained the same by this time the crowd was going wild and it was time for the dreaded penalty shootout to decide a winner.
Although Silvertown/Canvas City/West Watooka goalkeeper displayed good qualities he couldn’t hold the last goal and Wisroc/Block 22 won 5-4 on penalty kicks to advance to the finals.
Three yellow cards were given to Jahshawn Moore, Jamal Haynes and Darius Frank of Silvertown combined team in the 44th, 77th and 85th minutes.
In the second game in Group A, Silvercity/Alleys/Valleys defeated Blue Berry Hill 3-1 in a well contested game. It was evident from the sound of the whistle both teams were hungry for goals and it was Blue Berry Hill that drew first blood in the 29th minute.
As hard as Silvercity combined tried they couldn’t get pass the defence and goalkeeper of Blue Berry Hill and the first half ended 1 Nil in favour of Blue Berry Hill.
Silvercity/Valleys/Alleys never gave up hope and from the sound of the whistle for the second half they came out with ‘blood in their eyes’ as they went after goals. John Waldron aka Brown Boy was determined to score, and so in the 64th minute he placed the ball in the nets and equaled the score at 1 all. From then on the defence for both teams secured their goals and at the end of regulation time it was 1 -1.
With twenty minutes of extra time set , Silvercity/Valleys/Alleys lost no time and Delon Lafferman netted the second goal and in quick succession the third goal came off the boot of Calvin Drakes, with Lafferman scoring his second and fourth goal for his team just as the overtime ended to loud screams from their fans.
Two yellow cards and one red card were given in this game.
The finals will be played tonight at the same venue with Wisroc/Block22 coming against Silver City/Valleys/Alleys and Blue Berry Hill and Silvertown/Canvas City/West Watooka will be play for third place. (Jacquey Bourne)
