-Woodpecker Hikers edge Old Fort Shooting Stars
The Woodpecker Hikers entered the lone Saturday’s ladies clash as favourites over
the Old Fort Shooting Stars. Despite the Hikers reputation and better win ratio against Old Fort, the Shooting Stars have been improving with each showing and were determined to improve on their record.
Old Fort adapted a more attackin g line-up with regular sweeper and junior national Minsodia Culpepper playing in the midfield and a forward line boost with the return of the powerful speedster Shonnette Moore. The Hikers however dominated the opening minutes of play in the match with national midfielder Marisha Fernandes initiating several attacks from the left. With the first half coming to a close and the Old Fort defence holding firm, Hikers midfielder Latacia Chung received a ball from the right at the top of the Old Fort scoring circle. Chung muscled through a strong challenge by the Old Fort sweeper before sending her shot by the left leg of the advancing goalkeeper.
While the Hikers enjoyed the greater share of possession throughout the match, Old Fort were able to make a few purposeful attacking raids but the solid Hikers defence were too much for them to make an impact. The final whistle saw the Hikers victorious by 1-0.
The Woodpecker Hikers faced pre-tournament favourites, Pizza Hut GCC yesterday, while Old Fort went up against the Spartans.
